Beyonce Giselle Knowles, born September 4, 1981 is known for her many talents. She is a songwriter, dancer and singer. She is also an actress and fashion designer. She has performed all over the world. Beyonce is now a solo artist coming from a band called Destiny's Child. Let's have a closer look into her life.

Growing Up in Texas

Born in Houston, Texas to a Creole Mom and an African American father, she is the oldest of their two children. Her Mom, Tina nee Beyonce, is a Louisiana French Creole costume designer. Dad, Mathew Knowles was a salesman. As you can see, Beyonce was named after her mother's last name and that was a tribute for her. Her little sister's name is Solnage Knowles.

Beyonce was her church's soloist in the choir. Also, at the young age of seven, she was attending dance school to go along with her electrifying voice. In fact, her first outstanding performance was when she sang a song by John Lennon at a school event. From then she decided to pursue her career. She knew what she wanted at such a young age and she got it, too.

Bringing all of her best girlfriends together to perform a quartet right behind Mom's salon, the Girl's Tyme group later became Destiny's Child. They got their break on Star Search. Daddy Knowles quit his six figure salary job to manage the group and help them reach their dreams. This put a damper on the family, but that goes to show that Daddy's love prevails. Later, in 1996, the girls signed with Columbia Records and that seemed to get the family back on track. The name Destiny's Child was the final pick after four others and was inspired from the Bible.

Destiny's Child went on and became a trio. They were in the top five with No No No part 2. Then they hit the charts again with top singles, top ten s and number one albums. They truly made a name for themselves in the late 90's and early 2000. Say My Name won two Grammy's in 2001. Beyonce also won the Songwriter of the Year award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, becoming the very first black woman to receive this award. Not to mention the second female, overall.

Independent Woman

After their last album, Fulfilled, Beyonce broke away from Destiny's Child to become an independent women. Her first single was 'I Got That'. In 2003, she teamed up with Jay-Z for his single, Bonnie and Clyde. What an honor to do a duet with Luther Vandross, in a 1977 hit, 'The Closer I Get To You'. They shared a Grammy for that as well. Oh yes, she debuted her first solo album in 2003 called Dangerously in Love. It sold 317,000 in just one week and hit the Billboard 200 as number one. Not to mention all the other charts throughout the world. jay-Z also starred in her "Are You My Woman (Tell Me So)" song. That song stuck to the number one spot for 8 weeks. B'Day was released on Beyonce's twenty fifth birthday and sold about 541,000 copies in the US the first week. She starred in The Pink Panther and Dreamgirls and carries two Golden Globe Awards.

Beyonce has many influences, has won many awards and inspires many girls all over. Some of her influences include Tina Turner, Donna Summer, Dianna Ross, Patti LaBelle, Whitney Houston and Anita Baker. She has been going strong for eighteen years.
