Macrobiotic Diet - Macrobiotic comes from a Greek word "macro" that means large or long and "bios" that means life. A macrobiotic diet is known to be a very healthy diet. This diet has found many connoisseurs throughout the world. The followers of this diet believe that there is a direct influence of what we eat on our happiness and our physical and spiritual health.

Let us first see what a sample of this diet consists of. This diet is focused on consuming the foods that are less processed. This diet is low in fats and high in fiber. Whole grains and vegetables are the main ingredients of this diet.

What should be the composition of a sample macrobiotic diet

There are some guiding principles that should be followed in this diet. The diet actually changes with the change in climate but if you follow these guidelines, you will know a perfect ratio. Sugars, spices, meat, eggs, alcohol and cheese are completely out of this diet. Here is a list of the foods that you should consume.

50 % of each meal should be whole grains. Brown rice, whole wheat berries, barley, rye, millet, buckwheat and corn are some examples of the whole grains that can be consumed.

25 % of the meal should be seasonal vegetables. One third of these vegetables can be taken in raw form and the other can be boiled, steamed sautéed or baked.

10 % should be protein foods like beans, legumes, fish or bean products like tofu, natto, etc. 5 % of the meal should be sea vegetables or seaweeds.

5 % of the meal should be soups. They are generally made with Miso and shoyu, which are made from fermented soybeans.

5% of the meal should be fruits, nuts, or seeds. The nuts and seeds can be lightly roasted and salted with sea-salt.

A number of celebrities are also following a this diet. Hollywood is bursting of many such personalities. Madonna is a faithful follower of all natural foods. Not only that, people with some serious medical problems like cancer and AIDS are also recommended this diet. Though there have been no proofs to say that these conditions can be cured by macrobiotic diet but the high-fibre and low-fat contents help them in the long run.

Like all other diets, are there any dangers of a macrobiotic diet too?

There are not any major dangers of thediet. However, since it is a very strict diet, you can face some nutritional deficiencies. Protein, iron, vitamin B12, calcium and magnesium are the nutrients that can be found in very less quantities while you are on this diet. Some people feel lack of energy due to deficiency in protein.

This diet is healthy as it is based on foods that contain less saturated fat. The foods that are consumed are high in phytoestrogens; it also helps in balancing female hormones, and is found helpful with premenstrual syndrome, menopause, and prevention against endometriosis and breast cancer.

When you decided to try this diet, make sure that you chew your food properly. This diet is a simple way to maintain optimal health
